The OPP have utilized motorcycles for patrol purposes since its inception in 1909. Today, we continue to maintain this longstanding tradition and operate a motorcycle program throughout the province. The addition of motorcycles and trained operators enhances our effectiveness in conducting directed patrols, traffic enforcement, escorts and providing security for VIP motorcades. They have also been used to assist with community parades, events and funeral processions. A position on the annual motorcycle operators' course held annually in Orillia is highly sought after. The three week course involves intensive training and skills development to safely conduct patrols and other motorcycle duties .
The Essex County OPP detachment currently has two motorcycles in its fleet and six qualified riders including a team leader sergeant. One of our members has actively participated in the world renowned precision motorcycle team known as "The Golden Helmets" who volunteer to entertain and promote positive police - community relationships. In addition to operational commitments, our members participate in local community events in the Windsor-Essex County region and; when called upon, escort funeral processions including memorials for fallen comrades.
